An employee announces they are pregnant, what do you do?

As independent HR Managers supporting companies of all sizes, we are frequently asked so many questions about maternity rights from business owners and managers.  Firstly, we ensure there is a clear Maternity Policy to provide framework for both parties.  We don’t stop there; we actively engage with them to ensure they understand all options for them and the employee.  Yes, we can provide the right documents to give to the employee and time frames but sometimes both parties just need to talk to someone about what to expect.

We are happy to engage with both parties, ensuring there is open and frequent communication. In the past so many times we have seen that a problem has occurred due to the employer being scared when an employee announces they are pregnant, they seem to freeze or go into a tail spin.
