Are you any good at delegating?

The HR Blog

If you find delegating easy, you’re one of the lucky ones, for the majority it isn’t that easy.

We are all told to delegate to others, this could be by outsourcing or someone within your company.  We all know it is the right thing to do, but how many times have you said to yourself ‘it is easier to do it myself’?  So, the work remains on your to do list, which is getting longer and is stopping you from taking on different and more challenging work.

Before you start to delegate, remember whatever is delegated is still your responsibility so you have to be clear on what you want, how you want it done and also they need to report back to you when the work is done.  You can then check it is done correctly.

Remember no one does it the same as you, so that is the first thing to acknowledge.  Then spend some time thinking what you can delegate, remember it isn’t the same as palming off a job you don’t want to do.  If you want it done well, you will have to spend time training them and ensuring they realise how it important it is to get it right. They may not get it right first time, but work with them until they do.

As a leader, it’s your job to offer your staff new challenges and learning opportunities and help them grow. Do this well and you’ll have a happier team, as well as more time and energy to focus on other important and challenging things for you and your business.
