Blue Monday is often cited as the most depressing day of the year. It falls on the third Monday of the year.
Whether it is the most depressing day of the year, or not, is open to debate.
In terms of its origin, rather than anything scientific, it is understood that Blue Monday originated as a marketing ploy to sell holidays. This was based on a number of variables, such as the weather at this time of year, Christmas seeming a long time ago, and it feeling a long stretch until pay day. It was felt that people needed to do something positive and motivational.
The Samaritans have started a counter-campaign called Brew Monday, which labels Blue Monday a “myth” and encourages people to “make time for a cuppa and a catch-up”.
Regardless of this, and the time of year, we all have days when we feel better than others, so now’s as good a time as any to catch up with your team and colleagues, check in on their health and mental health, and have a brew.
Are you worried about any of your team, and their mental health?
