Did you know that this Saturday, 17 February, is Random Act of Kindness Day.

The HR Blog

Whilst a number of US States lay claim to its origins, it’s believed that a reporter noted that people should stop reporting on ‘random acts of violence’ and start ‘practicing random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty’.

This was based on the premise that positive effects of kindness are experienced in the brain of everyone who witnessed the act, improving their mood and making them significantly more likely to ‘pay it forward.’ This means one good deed in a crowded area can create a domino effect and improve the day of dozens of people!

The Be Kind movement followed later, along with #BeKind, which was created in 2017 by a mother who lost her son to suicide, though probably only brought to a lot of people’s consciousness by the passing of Caroline Flack in 2020.

Anyway, we digress.  Being kind is great and there’s probably things that we can do such as letting someone out in the traffic.  Makes them feel good and probably us you too, assuming they give a flash or hand up to say thank you! Compliment a friend or stranger, cook a meal for someone who’s struggling.

But what about just being fair, being inclusive and having integrity?

All of the things that make a workplace a great place to be.  This starts by getting the foundations right.  What’s in your Employee Handbook?  Is it up to date?  Does it include things like an Inclusion & Diversity statement? Do you have a Menopause Policy?

Once you’ve got the foundations in place, you need to make sure you’re doing things right.  Are you monitoring the diversity in your business?  Is there more that you can do, not just to stay on the right side of the law, but also to embrace the benefits that inclusion and diversity can bring.

We can help you with all of this; handbooks, policies, statements, as well as monitoring and supporting you to deal with issues relating to these.  Contact us on TellMeMore@HRBusCons.co.uk

Contact us on 01483 697 076 to discuss your business and its needs.

Remember, being kind doesn’t have to be just this Saturday
