Do you have a person that is really hard to manage and they keep interrupting you? What should you do?

The HR Blog

You have an employee who is really hard to manage, they always seem to have a problem, they come to you when it is not convenient and when they ask a question you find you are not listening and give them a quick knee jerk decision so they will leave you alone and the decision you give may not have been the right one.

Do you realise that you are creating the problem by not managing them correctly?  Step back and look at why they are coming to you asking questions.  Is it because you haven’t given them direction, been concise with your instructions, do you meet with them regularly and listen to them, really listen to them?

Every employee is different, you need to look at them individually, work out how it is best to communicate with them, teach them how to communicate with you, give them boundaries, tell them when the best time to approach you. If you don’t put these steps in place the problem will not go away.

This employee is probably bursting with ideas, they may have spotted a problem that no one has thought of, they think that you are happy to approach them when they want.

You need to have a plan and put boundaries in place, for you and them.
