Do you have a rotten apple in your team?

The HR Blog

You have an employee that spends their time talking to their colleagues about how they are not appreciated, and they are looking for another job.

They are entitled to look for another role, but not to interview and look for a job in work time or spend time talking to their colleagues about it.  If you hear about this, you can speak to them saying they need to be discrete and not to look for a job during work time.  You may want to retain them if so then this is the time to look how you have been managing them, what you could do better and what steps you need to put in place to keep them.

Or you may feel it is time for them to leave, but it may take some time as they may not really be looking that hard, just talking about it.  You therefore need to focus them and get them working.

Think of all the colleagues they are speaking to and the impact they are having.  Some might just empathise with them, but some might be dragged down by this person and look to leave too.  You need to ensure you are communicating with these employees and engaging them.  They might put their CV online and are snapped up with the unappreciated employee still working for you.

It is up to you to manage the rotten apple
