Setting goals, both for your business and your employees can boost employee motivation, create transparency and help you and your employees determine where to focus time and energy, and there’s no better time to do it than now, at the start of the New Year.
First and foremost, you and your leadership team need to establish the goals and objectives for your Company. This is a crucial step because all team and employee goals are then tied to this. Simply put, this means documenting what the Company wants to achieve, ideally in the form of a vision, a mission and some short and mid-term goals.
Once the Company objectives and team objectives are set, the next step is to agree individual Goals and Targets with each team member. Involve employees in this process, ensure they understand both the Company and team objectives and allow them some freedom to determine how they can contribute to the Company’s success by completing their individual objectives.
To use an analogy, a boat moves faster when all the rowers are pulling in the same direction.
Throughout the year, check in on how things are going and provide feedback and motivation.
Then reward success.
Recognising success is paramount to boost morale, productivity and retention. Salaries may be reviewed annual, but it’s not all about financial reward.
Other ways to reward employees for a job well done include:
Thank them publicly – at a team event or Town Hall
Send them a note to thank them for their efforts and success
Arrange a team lunch or night out
Give them a gift card, for a meal with their partner/family
Provide an opportunity to work on a special project
Offer an educational investment
Ask the customer to send them a thank you note
