Do you know how to focus your employees? As you can appreciate, we are all different and what may focus you, may not focus me. So, you really need to step back to look at everyone individually. Here are a couple of ways for you to think about how to focus your employees.
Financial
This is the obvious one, give them a goal and reward them financially when they hit it. What happens when they reach it? Set them another or do they stop until the next financial year? You can always carry on rewarding them when they overachieve. The next year you increase the goal, but not out of reach as that can be demotivating.
Giving financial focus you need to think this one through as well as the financial implication to the company if you do this for a whole department. What happens when you decide to stop it?
Projects
Some people like to be given the responsibility of a project and left alone to get on with it. Others mind find a project daunting. So, you can give it to both, but one will need support more than the other. The latter may need to be shown how to break it down into small chunks and set milestones. Check in with them and support them as they progress, as well as reflecting on what has been achieved. Yes, you need to invest time in this person, which you may feel you haven’t got time, or it would be easier to do it yourself. But take the view you are giving them a new skill and hopefully this person will need less support next time.
Career Path
Some of your employees may want to know they have a mapped-out career path. Unfortunately, most companies don’t have the luxury to do this, but you can second them to other departments to grow them, look at succession planning, how can you skill them up so that if someone in another role leaves or off sick the company has a backup plan.
Or just ask them, they may surprise you, you never know.
