How much holiday have your employees used so far this year? None…then you need a plan.

The HR Blog

We are nearly halfway through the year and you need to see how much holiday your employees have taken.  Yes, it is not a normal year, but employees need to use their holiday.  The government have allowed employees to carry four weeks over the next two years, but this is if they were unable to take it due to work commitments, not if they do not want to take it.

Everyone needs a break away from work, so it is time to run a report to see who has taken holiday and what is left.  You need to then encourage them to take their holiday.  If they refuse because they are not able to go away then you need as an employer to insist they take time off to relax, even being on furlough they could not go out, now they can….but not complete freedom as yet. It is your duty of care as an employee to ensure they take holiday.

So, what happens if they will not take holiday, then you must insist by giving them twice as much notice of holiday you want them to take ie two weeks for one week’s holiday.

If work does not permit them to take all their holiday and they are carrying over some holiday, you need to put some boundaries in place otherwise the first quarter of 2021 you may find everyone trying to go away.

You need to start communicating to your employees now, rather than in three months’ time when time is short and so is the sunshine.
