How should you handle vaping in the workplace?

The HR Blog

Should you ban or embrace the concept of vaping in the workplace?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol.  These have become popular with 5.5 per cent of adults regularly using an e-cigarette according to the Office for National Statistics in 2017.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping believe ‘reasonable vaping etiquette’ guidelines should be drawn up and all outside areas should be available to vapers unless there is a legitimate safety concern or professional reason to prohibit it.

Do we know enough about vaping, well not really?  What do they contain?  Will they impact on your colleagues?  Is there different levels?  Most of us have no idea.

What we do know is there is no law preventing vaping in the workplace, so it is down to the company to set a clear policy.  Also every company should have a clear smoking policy rather than just saying the employees cannot smoke in the workplace.  This is to ensure that the non smokers don’t feel they are being treated equally, with smokers and vapers having a number of breaks outside whilst they are working.
