How to communicate with employees who are working at home

The HR Blog

With home working currently on the rise it is really important that you and your managers have regular daily communication with employees.  Ensure they have a plan of when they will speak to employees, how ie Skype, Facetime or over the phone and have an agenda.

Design a way employee can report/update you on the work so that it is clear what is expected of them and you are able to plan further work. You may need to prepare a report to feed up further in the business too.  Don’t over complicate it all but having clear boundaries helps everyone.

As with a normal day at work the manager and employee would discuss workloads, projects, problems and so these need to continue.   Employees still need to be appraised, factor that into the plan.  You may also have to identify training for the employees, this can often be done over the phone or identify a coaching opportunity.

Remember some employees may not like working at home on their own and have little contact with anyone so their daily call from their manager maybe critical for them.

You want to keep the employees engaged with the company and it is the managers and business owner responsibility.
