Non-starter Syndrome, what is it?

The HR Blog

You make the offer, the candidate happily accepts, hands in their notice and comes back with a start date.  You the employer are pleased and focus on their start date.  Meanwhile the employee works their notice which can drag on or the current employer might be enticing them to remain and the only relationship they have is with the recruitment agency or their current employer.

Research has suggested non-starter syndrome is something all employers should worry about.   A survey found two-thirds (67 per cent) of 250 UK HR professionals have seen new recruits quit before starting.

As an employer, what should you do? It is time to start building a relationship, explain the culture, share knowledge and keep them excited about starting with you.  Here are some suggestions

  • Create a Welcome Pack with all the information they need to know about the area, office etc
  • Let them know what they can expect the first day
  • Their manager contacts them updating them on the department, projects etc
  • Send them the Employee Handbook
  • Arrange for them to meet for drinks or a social event prior to starting
  • Allocate a buddy who will make contact before they start

The list is endless, you need to adapt it to your company, you want the employee excited to be starting with you but don’t flood them with too much.
