Here are some tips on how to keep your employees motivated after their summer holidays

As the days get shorter and staff come back from their summer holidays, keeping employees motivated can become something of a challenge. Returning to the office after spending a couple of weeks sipping on piña coladas on a beach can leave many with low morale and wishing they were back in the sunshine. In order to address this issue, many companies are now introducing reward schemes that energise their employees and boost their motivation.

The businesses that see sustained success throughout the year are those who care as much about motivating their staff as they do pleasing their customers. An engaged workforce will result in the delivery of a service that is of the highest standards, which will ultimately please the client and help the business achieve its goals.

Effective rewarding

Many businesses have traditionally given their employees rewards like chocolates and wine around the Christmas season. Whilst few employees are likely to complain about receiving such a gift, they’re not likely to remember it for long, especially as many ‘bottles of something’ are consigned to the kitchen cupboard for months.

Employers need to remember that all employees are unique; each has different tastes, ambitions, and interests, so it makes sense to reflect this in their rewards. Offering a personalised gift shows you pay attention to them and take an interest beyond their role in the company. Offering a gift that relates to an individual’s wants and needs makes them feel truly valued and gives them another reason to care about your business.

A gift to remember

One option to consider is a gift card. The range and flexibility offered by gift cards means that an employer can select the right gift card for each employee. As such, these can be a great way to give a personal gift without the risk of an employee not liking the reward.

If one staff member is a bit of a ‘foodie’, for example, they could be rewarded with a gift card for a cookery course or meal with friends, whilst an employee with a passion for fashion may prefer a gift card for a high street fashion store. Rewards are not just about eating and shopping though; experiences and activities closely tailored to an individual’s personal interests can be equally as inspiring. These can give employees the opportunity to do something new, unusual, or special outside of work, such as go-karting, an art class, or a trip to the theatre.

Benefits of rewarding staff

For all these reasons, when it comes to motivating staff, employers should think about adopting a personal approach to rewarding that really shows their employees how well they know them and recognise their efforts. Taking such actions now will keep staff motivated and help ensure that the business offers the best service possible all throughout the year.

Rewarding employees has to be done fairly, create a target or have a vote but make sure everyone knows how the decision is being made or what they have to do to be rewarded.
