Overweight workers cost the UK Economy Billions – how can you help reduce the bill?

Did you know that absences due to lifestyle related diseases are costing the economy an estimated £8.2 billion?  Also admin workers at highest rates, with a shocking 77% classified as Overweight or Obese?

 

There have been some alarming figures reveal that 63% (NOO.org) of Brits are either overweight or obese. With so many living such an unhealthy lifestyle, it has proven to have a detrimental effect on Britain’s industries and on overstretched NHS resources.

 

Sickness absence rates due to lifestyle related diseases costs the British economy over £8.2 billion per year. However, the problems spill over into the workplace too, with workers having low energy levels, decreased productivity and low morale.  There are multiple lifestyle and economic factors that alter the likelihood of certain individuals being obese or overweight, but it seems that sedentary jobs increase the risk.

 

Statistics highlighted that those working in Leisure and Hospitality are the least likely be at threat, with those overweight and obese at 52%; 10% less than the national obesity average of 62%. In contrast, those working in administration are those most at danger, with obesity rates of 77%; a substantial 15% higher than the national average.

 

So what can you do as an employer?  You don’t want to say no to birthday cakes or treats, so here are some suggestions

 

  • Suggest everyone brings in something healthy for a lunch each week, then all sit down and eat together, in an ideal world, but if not in teams.

 

 

  • Set timers so they take a break from their computer but rather than making reading paperwork get them to walk around the office as well.

 

  • Have lunch hours out of the office

 

  • Get a fruit bowl in once a week or chopped veggie stick or another healthy snack

 

  • Contact the local sports centre to see if you can negotiate corporate discount
