As a manager, part of your role is to lead, both figuratively and literally. An effective leader must be seen out front by their team and inspire them to follow. To do so, you must lead by example. Here are seven ways to set a positive example to your team. Listen to your team
No matter how busy you are, don’t forget to take the time to listen. Asking for feedback from your team (and other departments) can provide you will valuable insight. Ensuring your team feels heard is key to good management and boosting team morale, and it is good to seek guidance when needed. Get your hands dirty
To get to your position you will have worked hard and accrued a good understanding of your business. Don’t forget with leadership comes responsibility, and it is vital that you still work alongside your team. In doing so you can build their trust and respect, and ensure you stay on top of any changing industry trends.
Take responsibility
Whether you’re the one who’s made a mistake or it was one of your team, you’re still accountable. You should be able to take it upon yourself to guarantee that there is a solution to the problem and put processes in place to safeguard it from occurring again.
Take care of yourself
It’s important that you look after youhealth and wellbeing. Working yourself into the ground or stressing about a big project coming up is in the long term less productive. Set a good example to the people you work with – take a lunch hour and eat away from your desk.
Give sincere praise
Evidence shows that when you positively reinforce desired behaviour, it is likely that behaviour will be repeated. You should recognise both the big and small things your employees get right and reward and appreciate them accordingly. This is probably one of the best motivational methods you can employ.
Let them do their thing
Communicate the task, vision, values and anything your team need to successfully complete the task, then step back. Giving your team the time to innovate, be creative and produce their own work without your interference will provide them with a real sense of pride and achievement.
Be inspirational
Leadership isn’t about bossing people around, it is about inspiring the people you work with to get the best out of them as you all work together to achieve a common goal.
As a manager, adopt a lead by example mindset in order to demonstrate and inspire your team and colleagues with positive behaviours. These suggestions will enable you to build trust, and once you have their trust you can be sure that they will be willing to follow.
