The answer is yes, it is good for them to know what is happening within the company and their department as it will aid their return to work. Speak to them when they first go off and discuss how often they would like to be contacted and how. This should be documented and ensure you do contact them at the agreed time.
It is important to take into consideration why they are off. If they are off due to a mental health or work related stress then non-serious or non-urgent issues or matters should not be raised until the employee returns to work.
Any disciplinary or performance issues should not be broached in such communications. This will be dealt with when they return.
