We all know about Health and Safety in the work place, but what about Health and Wellbeing?

The problem is wellbeing means different things to all of us.  It covers a huge area including physical, mental, emotional and social health and the idea of being ‘well’.  So as an employer what should you be doing? Well you cannot sort it all out with a bowl of fruit, but is a great start.  Any wellbeing initiative needs to relate to the needs of your workforce or it’s not going to work.

You can put a Wellbeing Policy in place, but really you need to lead from the top and take action, yes you have heard that before but we all know it does work not to mention it can help you to.  Here are some things that might start the wellbeing ball rolling

  • It could be small things that ensuring everyone takes their lunch break every day, including you.
  • Start a walking or running club
  • Get someone into do a desk and chair assessments to ensure your employees are sitting correctly; the lights aren’t causing a problem
  • Encouraging people to work their hours
  • Ensure everyone’s job description is correct so they know what they are doing
  • Meet with your employees regularly to talk about their work, development and give them time to talk to you too.
  • Managing sickness absence

These are all small but important easy fixes which can start the process.  You need to think about how you work, the small changes you can make and educate your managers.  We all know a happier workforce is more productive.
