What happens if an employee is late for no fault of theirs?

The HR Blog

Leaves on the line or snow expected

Yes, we have heard that announcement on the radio or on the platform so many times both as an employer and employee.  Thoughts fly into your head panicking about work.  For the employer you wonder if everyone can get to work on time or should they work from home.

An employee thinking, when they get to the station, what other route can they take to get there on time, or will their employer say they can work from home?

So, what happens if employee arrives late due to other circumstances be it leaves on the line, tree in the road, an accident or snow.  Well it is the employee’s responsibility to make up the time.  As employer you think ‘oh it has only happened once, so what is the problem?’  But how do you know it is only going to be once?  That is when a good manager should be recording these times.  It is not you being big brother watching you, it just to record the facts so you know it isn’t you feeling like it happens every week.

If you decide the first time is all right and no need to make up the time that is fine, as long as you are consistent across the company.  If there is a tree blocking a road which impacts some making them late, then you can decide, but you need to be fair and consistent.

Through lockdown we have now been able to work from home and so most companies have a back up plan. We are told this week that snow may come and icy conditions.   It is good to take time out to plan for the next coming months, ensure all employees know it is their responsibility to get to work on time or must make the time up.  Also if snow comes be prepared to work from home, what is required for them, safe access to the systems etc.  As an employer you are seen to be fair and as an employee you know where you stand.
