IF IT’S JUST AN APPRAISAL, WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

Blog

So, you are conducting your first appraisal and of course want it to go smoothly. What are the possible pitfalls and how can you avoid them?

Failing to prepare: take time out prior to the appraisal to review the employee’s performance throughout the year. Where appropriate, gather evidence such as emails, etc. Get clear on what you want to say.

Too much preparation: whilst you need to have your facts to hand and know what you plan to say, don’t be so focused on your role that you don’t hear what is being said to you. Be open-minded. It’s important to actively listen and not interrupt. This is your employee’s opportunity to share with you too, and some find it hard to talk about themselves. Be encouraging.

Losing your way: remember, this is a review and not a forum to discuss any performance issues in-depth, which should be addressed in another meeting. This can be set up during the appraisal.

Finishing too soon: don’t think it’s all over with the end of the appraisal, it’s not. Take notes during to enable you to follow up. Consider your employee’s career development: what training may be required? What support can you give? Set them objectives for the year and plan regular 1 to 1’s. Prepare to finish as well as you started, and always leave your employee on a positive note.
