Mental Awareness Week, we can all help, here is how you can do your bit…..

The HR Blog

We spend up to 40 hours with our work colleagues and employees, more than you do with your friends and families, so will notices any changes and can help them.

If you see someone who suddenly can’t finish one thing and goes to another and another not finishing anything, withdraws into themselves, sick but not taking time off or suddenly becomes loud or aggressive, these may all be signs that they are suffering from mental health issues or they may not.

What if you take a couple of minutes to ask how they are?  Then wait for a response rather than walking away just ready to listen.  They may say nothing but they will feel pleased that someone has asked and entered into a conversation, showing they care.  It may take a few chats for someone to open up but having someone to talk to is a great help.  You may have to give them examples of things that you have noticed they may then open up.

Everyone is different but we like to know someone cares and will listen to them.  If you are a manager or a colleague by giving someone an opportunity to be listened to, what have you got to lose?
