The Situation: growth became an unmanageable problem

Our client became a victim of its own successful growth. Or, could have become so. Starting small, with just a few employees posed no problem for this business in terms of people management.

However, fast-forward to the time of HR Business Consultants’ appointment, and the numbers had increased to 15. A growing business, and successful – but now with a different type of challenge:

Suddenly, everything looked different, and felt different. The owner, previously able and happy to engage with his staff on a day-to-day basis, was now increasingly tied up in other important company matters.

The realisation that he did not know his employees in any meaningful way, nor their aspirations, and most certainly not their talent and potential to the enterprise, was the catalyst for him contacting us.

The Task: to enable the business owner to maximise his in-house talent

Any company’s greatest asset is its staff, and he was keen to demonstrate his understanding of this key fact.

The Action: finding out where an operation is, and where it wants to be

HR Business Consultants worked closely with the owner of the business to gain a full picture of where the areas of concerns were, and to establish a clear roadmap for improvements.

We identified that appraisals were not happening, and discussed the benefits and the importance of these, in terms of personal and professional growth, motivation, engagement and so on. As these were new concepts, both to the business and the team themselves, these talks offered much food for thought.

The consultancy team then trained the managers on how to conduct an effective appraisal. We also worked collaboratively with the employees, offering them advice on making the most of the appraisals process, and how they can contribute effectively to the success of a company.

The Result:

An all-round improvement in communication, more streamlined processes and the introduction of exciting, innovative ideas, were just a few of the positive results.

Each employee was fully armed with his or her objectives, each of which was linked to the company’s strategic goals. The outcome was that the staff now understood clearly not only the business’ “direction of travel” but also how valuable each and every one of them were in helping it to get there.

As a result, the entire team were far more engaged than previously, and ready to be the best they could be.
